An Alcoholic (The “Personal” Evolution of a Good Man)

Anne Lamont. Hope begins in the dark, the stubborn hope that if you wait and watch and work: you don’t give up.

Your Existence Gives Me Hope

Dear Alcoholics:

If we are responsible for the future of mankind — and I believe that we are — then it means that we are also responsible for the development of the next generation. But, not only the next generation but at least the generation following that one, too. (Yeah, the Bible mentions that, too.)

Based on evolution then we have the capacity as humans to alter our genes, the very core of our physical being within our lifetime unlike the ‘lower’ animals. No, your Uncle Eddie who just can’t-get-right does not count as a ‘lower’ animal.

A question for people that want to be parents:

If you would like to be the best father or mother to your child, then it makes sense that you should become the best person that you can become?

Doesn’t it also makes sense that you should develop the habit of doing better today than you did yesterday?

More specifically, you should create a pattern of consistent “personal evolution“.

As a recovering addict, I believe that drunks and alcoholics have a better understanding of the power of the subconscious mind to guide us toward our goals than the average person. Until you experience the withdrawal of an obsession with alcohol or drugs then this may be hard to grasp.

AN ALCOHOLIC

Let me try to explain…

When an alcoholic wakes up in the morning the first thing he or she thinks about is a drink.

When an alcoholic goes to work the majority of the day is spent thinking about the next time he or she will get a chance to drink.

When the alcoholic goes to bed he or she is drunk.

The alcoholic usually had a predisposition for drinking whether that was genetics or environment.

The alcoholic at some point made the logical decision that drinking was what he or she wanted to do and; therefore, set a goal to drink on any and every occasion possible.

The stories that an alcoholic tells usually begins with “I was so drunk” or “We just began or ran out of beer/liquor when” or “I was drinking”.

Drinking became a challenge that needed to be mastered and the alcoholic sought out its mastery certificate – jails, institutions and death. (Don’t think that you have to be physically locked up in a facility or buried in a coffin to receive a certificate.)

An alcoholic’s vocabulary revolves around alcohol, drinking, and places to get drunk.

The majority of an alcoholic’s decisions are centered around whether he or she can drink and do (whatever it is).

Lastly, the alcoholic’s solution to most any and everything is “let’s have a drink” or “let me have a drink first”.

A DIFFERENT FORMULA

This behavior is synonymous with an ‘obsession’ or a ‘burning desire’ towards alcohol. The alcoholic has hardwired her brain towards the drink. A similar obsession is what Napoleon Hill preaches in Think & Grow Rich. Hill taught that we can have whatever we think we can have as long as we focus on it and believe that we can have it.

Bottle of HELP

Simple formula for riches:              Alcoholic’s formula:

1. decide on a goal                           1. decides to drink (drinking is the goal)

2. write it down & read daily           2. plans how to drink every day

3. make it an obsession                    3. obsesses about drink

It’s the obsession that leads us to achieving our goals; and, that’s whether that goal is good or bad for us! We definitely want to have healthy obsessions — I prefer the word ‘burning desire’ but obsession gives the proper mind state for an alcoholic making the ‘personal’ evolution of a good man.
