His Eye Is On the Sparrow

Share This Post

As far as I can tell, this hymnal (His Eye Is On The Sparrow) was written by Civilla D Martin in the early 1900’s. Apparently, she wrote the hymn after a conversation that she had with a married couple she had befriended. Her friend was sick and bedridden but managed to stay upbeat for the most part. Civilla D Martin asked her friend for her secret.

Her friend’s response sparked the poetry/lyrics his eye is on the sparrow which became this beloved song.

Mrs. Martin was a teacher and poet and the wife to Dr. William Martin, a minister from Harvard University. I was not able to uncover whether this family was wealthy or not (although Harvard is not push-over university). What I know is that this song is rich with love.

Love for God.

Love for self.

Love for friends and family.

Family, the love that Civilla D Martin put into this song expresses itself in riches that continue to spread around the globe.

I was reminded of the lyrics to this song in church yesterday when the preacher wove them into his sermon. The song was brought to my attention again during a conference call that I was on earlier. I’m not sure about your religious affiliation and I really don’t care. I want you to get the message: You are a special individual despite what tragedy that you are going through.

Every living thing on this Earth is blessed from the sparrow to tree it’s perched in, from the hopeless alcoholic to the proud new mother.

During my class today ‘Teach made an interesting point about the power of love. It is a subject that I want to research better so that I can serve you better in a proper delivery of the message. (That means I’m looking for the right story.) Keep your mind open to the possibility of love. When we’ve been hurt, we tend to put too great a value on love — how we’ll receive it and how we will give it.

Leave your thoughts on the subject of love or something about this song in the comments box below.

Lyrics to “His Eye Is On the Sparrow”

Why should I feel discouraged, why should the shadows come,
Why should my heart be lonely, and long for heaven and home,
When Jesus is my portion? My constant friend is He:
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

Refrain
I sing because I’m happy,
I sing because I’m free,
For His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He watches me.

“Let not your heart be troubled,” His tender word I hear,
And resting on His goodness, I lose my doubts and fears;
Though by the path He leadeth, but one step I may see;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

Refrain

Whenever I am tempted, whenever clouds arise,
When songs give place to sighing, when hope within me dies,
I draw the closer to Him, from care He sets me free:
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.

Refrain

D Arlando Fortune

Keep it as simple as A, B, C’s; 1, 2, 3’s; and, do, re, mi’s

PSS. The response that Mrs. Martin received from her friend was, ““Mrs. Martin, how can I be discouraged when my Heavenly Father watches over each little sparrow and I know He loves and cares for me?” YESSIR
